When James completed high school five years ago, his mom, Chris, began searching for the right place where he could continue learning, growing, and building connections. Like many parents, she carried both hope and worry—wondering where James would truly feel at home.
Hear Chris share James’ story in her own words in this short video below.
The moment she first walked into CLA’s CLASS Day Program, Chris felt at ease. “It was such a warm, welcoming environment,” she remembers. “James is not someone who will sit for too long—he needs space to move, explore, and come back when he’s ready. The staff understood him from day one.”
At first, James was introverted and hesitant in social settings. But over the past five years, his world has opened. With patience and encouragement, he has learned to participate in routines that once felt impossible. One of the biggest milestones was fire drills—something that used to terrify him. Today, thanks to consistent support, James willingly and calmly leaves the building with his peers.
“This young man has just blossomed,” Chris says proudly. “He now looks forward to the routine, the communication, and the friendships he’s built at CLASS. I could not ask for a better place for him to be.”
A New Chapter: Thriving in a Host Home
Recently, James and his family took another big step—transitioning into a host home. At first, Chris was hesitant. Could James adjust to living away from her, even part of the time?
To ease the transition, they began with short trial visits: first just an hour or two, then a night, then a weekend. Each step was an opportunity for James to build trust and confidence. To Chris’ amazement, he adjusted beautifully.
Today, James is thriving in his host home. Even more, he has developed a close friendship with another young man living there. The two share routines, laughter, and companionship—a reminder of the deep connections that can form when people are supported to live full, inclusive lives.
Looking Ahead
From blossoming at CLASS to settling into his host home, James’ journey shows what’s possible when families have choices and young adults are given the chance to grow at their own pace.
“I never imagined it would go this smoothly,” Chris reflects. “But now I see James not just adjusting—he’s thriving.”
At CLA, we are honored to walk alongside James and his family through each chapter of his story. Together, we celebrate independence, friendships, and the power of community.
