The 2024 CLASS gardening season is winding down. The season was noted to have a high level of cooperation between the gardeners. Since converting the garden from one big plot to individual gardening beds, CLASS members have taken ownership of a plot with a partner or two and shared production. Everyone took home an abundance of vegetables this year.

We had a particularly good year for kale and cucumbers. For several weeks, gardeners were taking home multiple cucumbers and armloads of kale. We also had a good year for tomatoes and peppers. But all was not perfect. This year’s struggles were with pumpkins and zucchini with maybe one each this year. But we did try a new crop – sweet potatoes. Since they are always harvested really late the results are not in yet, but it is looking good.

So, that is how gardening goes. One year you have so many cucumbers you don’t know what to do with them and the next year you will have corn coming out of your ears. Now the group moves to thinking about what vegetables did well and what we can grow next year. Many thanks to our Master Gardener Ken Dwenger for helping plan the garden, teaching our members how to do all the things necessary for a good harvest, and keeping our greenhouse going strong.
